Family History Database Project in the Works

I'm trying to start producing family history content that is convenient and readily available. Something that I can add to as I go and a place to keep notes or things I learn here and there. I have a substantial amount of research compiled in Family Tree Maker, but I'd like something that is closer to my finger tips, a little easier to manipulate, and easier to share in a number of ways. I just ran an Individual Index report in FTM and then exported it to Excel. So now I have a list of names, birth, marriage, and death dates, and spouses. I'm hoping that I can spend some time developing this into a spreadsheet that can be useful on the fly or if I'm away from my computer. It can be something I have in Google Drive or something else web-based, that I could update from my phone if need be.

Lately, I feel like I am taking in a ton of content or working on things for others, and I'd like to be able to go a little deeper on my own projects and knowledge or at least be able to access information quickly if I have a question come up in conversation.

Anyone else doing something like this? Already done it? Any suggestions or tools?

Hi Pete,

I had a similar issue a few years ago I had created a family tree on a PC but the software used was limited and could only be updated at home. I looked for a web based system and discovered PHPGEDVIEW which was been further developed in 2010 as WEBTREES (web trees.net). This is a web based solution which can be accessed/updated anywhere you have internet access - so you can even update it via a smart phone.

If you can export your family tree from FTM as a GED file then you can create an online FT by importing it into the website.

As I am your 3rd cousin once removed I am happy to give you access to http://nicholas.familypage.org.uk so you can see it in action. Is your email still p******n@ozroh*******l.com (Can't believe we last emailed in 2011! but I have seen your posts on the Facebook group)

If you have a web host and are comfortable with installing a PHP/MSQL application then it's easy to install but if you don't they I have room on my web host to setup a web trees for you to import your FT. (under a subdomain <your choice>.familypage.org.uk)

A webtrees FT is secure - living relatives are NOT visible to the public however you (or any relative) can view them by setting up user/password access. Also you can link images, add notes etc to individuals/families.

Kind Regards

Tom
